John Lucas traces most troubles in the garden back to that regrettable incident in the Garden of Eden. If only that fruit from the tree of knowledge had been smitten by a severe attack of codling moth, scab or mildew, the world might be a very different place. But the fruit was tasted and enjoyed, and gardens, like everything else on earth, are fated to give their share of pain as well as pleasure. But there’s humour in that ignoble pile beyond your back door. This is a handbook, in fact, for the sensible expert who doesn’t take himself too seriously, as well as for the incompetent average gardener who, wisely, prefers to enjoy his incompetence to improving his gardening.
